The city police would soon be able to deal with cyber crimes more effectively than ever as the Vijayawada Police Commissionerate is going to have a full-fledged Cyber Crime Police Station (CCPS).
The demand for a special police station to deal with increasing cases of cyber crime has been there since the bifurcation of the State, and the government accorded permissions to establish one a few months ago.
The police station will be headed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police and will have a dedicated team of two inspectors, four sub-inspectors, six head constables and 20 constables, according to official sources.
To make the team technically stronger, the selection of personnel is done based on their educational background.
The SIs roped in for the special station are engineering graduates.
Also, according to officials, the entire team has been trained in various levels of cyber laws, cyber security, cyber forensics and cyber crimes for two months at the eSF Labs Ltd, a cyber security and digital forensics research institute that entered into an MoU with the police department. They were given training at the Crime Investigation Departments in Hyderabad and Bhopal.
Once the CCPS is established, all the cyber crime cases reported in the commissionerate limits will be forwarded to it and also victims can directly walk into CCPS and lodge a complaint. The officers concerned will register an FIR and take up the investigation.
The CCPS will deal with all cases that fall under Information Technology Act, 2000 (Central Act 21 of 2000) and relevant provisions of the IPC.
At present, the procedure of establishing infrastructure for the CCPS is going on.
The existing Cyber Cell headed by an inspector is actively investigating the cyber crime cases and had detected several cases and also recovered stolen money online.
However, FIRs are registered at the area police stations.
Traffic police stations
Meanwhile, the city will get two more traffic police stations named as Gannavaram Traffic PS and Machavaram Traffic PS. The former will be covering the limits of Gannavaram and Unguturu police stations and the latter will cover the limits of Machavaram and Krishnalanka police stations.
On the other hand, the government has accorded permission to shifting of Cyber Crime Police Station of the Crime Investigation Department from Hyderabad to Vijayawada earlier this month. The CID’s CCPS will cover entire A.P. and headed by a DSP rank officer.
